Introduction
Two Christmas markets are best known in Stockholm: the market at the open-air museum Skansen, which runs on a few weekends a year, and the market on Stortorget in Gamla Stan. For Skansen the organiser publishes dates and hours itself. For Stortorget we only found a newspaper report, not an official page from the organiser; so we say so.

Skansen: the weekends are 27/28/29 November, 4/5/6 December, 11/12/13 December and 18/19/20 December, each time Friday and Saturday 10:00–17:00 and Sunday 10:00–16:00 (Skansen).
Route with children aged 7 to 9
Skansen is at Djurgårdsslätten 49–51. The Christmas market has been held there since 1903 and all payments there are cashless (Skansen).
Our tip: the order above is our suggestion, not a rule; times and prices are with the organiser.
Practical
In mid-December Stockholm has about 6 hours of daylight (own calculation with the NOAA solar position formula, see sources). Put the walk early in the day and keep the market for after dark.
Skansen is fully cashless; bring a debit or credit card.

You walk past the Christmas lights and a Christmas market and taste glögg and Swedish Christmas sweets along the way. A good first impression of the city in December.
Where to stay
How we chose: We searched Booking.com for a family of two adults and two children (7 and 9) for the period 11 December 2026 – 13 December 2026 and only kept places with a rating of at least 8.0 and 50+ reviews. So no paid placements, but addresses that guests themselves rate highly. We haven’t stayed there ourselves (yet).
