Introduction

Christmas in Oslo with children

In the middle of Oslo stands Jul i Vinterland, with a Ferris wheel, skating rink and stalls. In December there is also the big Christmas market of the Norsk Folkemuseum on Bygdøy, on four days. For both, the organisers publish dates and hours themselves; they are below with the source.

Route with children aged 7 to 9

A route that works with children aged 7 to 9

  1. Start at Jul i Vinterland. In the centre there is the Ferris wheel “Reisen til Julestjernen”, a skating rink and stalls; entry is free (Jul i Vinterland). For children aged 7 to 9 it is a good place for the first hour.
  2. Take the Christmas walk. The guided walk below shows you Oslo in December; current times and prices are with the provider.
  3. Pick one of the four days for Bygdøy. On 5, 6, 12 or 13 December the Norsk Folkemuseum Christmas market is open. Children up to and including 17 get in free; there is a children’s programme including Nisseleker (11:00–15:45), children’s theatre “Snekker Andersen” (13:00 and 14:30, ages 4–7), an open barn (10:30–16:00), Santa (15:30) and a Christmas tree walk (15:45).
  4. Horse and carriage ride. It costs NOK 50 per person (10:30–15:30), according to the museum. The museum has a heated lavvo.

Getting to Bygdøy: there is no parking (only for people with a disability). A free shuttle bus runs from Skøyen station, plus bus 30 or the Bygdøy ferry from Rådhuskaia to Dronningen (15 minutes, every 20 minutes), according to the Norsk Folkemuseum.

Our tip: the order above is our suggestion, not a rule; times and prices are with the organiser.

Practical

Good to know

🌙 Short daylight

In mid-December Oslo has about 6 hours of daylight (own calculation with the NOAA solar position formula, see sources). Save the Ferris wheel for after dark.

📅 Mind 24 December

Jul i Vinterland is closed on 24 December (Jul i Vinterland). Do not plan your visit for that day.

🚗 Driving time from the Netherlands

Utrecht to Oslo is about 1,500 km and roughly 16.5 hours of driving without breaks (OSRM route calculation, 24 October 2026). Check the ferries to see whether a crossing to Oslo fits better.

Where to stay

Where to stay: our 3 favourites

How we chose: We searched Booking.com for a family of two adults and two children (7 and 9) for the period 11 December 2026 – 13 December 2026 and only kept places with a rating of at least 8.0 and 50+ reviews. So no paid placements, but addresses that guests themselves rate highly. We haven’t stayed there ourselves (yet).
