A green ribbon dancing over a snowy forest: seeing the northern lights is at the top of many families’ lists. We’ve done the research for you: where your chances are best, how far the drive from Utrecht is and what to sort out beforehand.

First things first: there are no guarantees. The northern lights are nature. A clear, dark night matters at least as much as the place, and the more nights you stay, the better your chances.

Researched by Arjan from Zuidlaren, so you don’t have to · Sources: FMI, Visit Tromsø · updated 24 October 2026 · About this page

  • Finnish Lapland: on about half of the dark, clear nights (FMI)

🧤 Dress warmly

The FMI puts it briefly: dress very warmly. You’ll often stand still in the cold for a long time. Layers of wool or fleece under a windproof jacket, a hat, mittens and thick socks; bring an extra layer for the kids and a thermos flask. At the Aurora Sky Station, warm clothing and boots are included with the night visit.

📱 Check the forecast

The FMI has a real-time service for the northern lights; when the level shows red, it’s time to go outside. Find a dark spot with a clear view to the north. For Iceland, Veðurstofa Íslands shows a cloud map (green is cloudy, white is clear) and the activity on a scale of 0 to 9.

🚗 Safe on the road

If you drive yourself, tyre rules apply in winter; they’re listed per country further down. Only stop to watch in a car park, never at the roadside, and expect moose and reindeer.
