Introduction

Christmas in Copenhagen with children

Copenhagen has three Christmas markets that combine well with children: the free city markets on Nytorv and Højbro Plads, plus Tivoli, where Christmas is a season of its own. Below are the dates and hours as the organisers publish them, with the source. Where an organiser gives no hours, we point to the official page instead of guessing.

Route with children aged 7 to 9

A route that works with children aged 7 to 9

  1. Start at Nytorv & Gammeltorv. According to the City of Copenhagen there is a skating rink on Nytorv with free skate loan, and Santa visits. For children aged 7 to 9 it is a good first hour: move first, then warm up at the stalls.
  2. Walk on to Højbro Plads (from 14 November). In 2026 this market centres on Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, and talking trees tell the story of Julius Klejne (City of Copenhagen). That suits children who like a story along the way.
  3. Take a guided tour instead of searching yourself. The walking tour with æbleskiver below passes through the Christmas atmosphere of the centre; check the provider for current times.
  4. Finish in Tivoli, after dark. For Jul i Tivoli, Tivoli mentions Santa’s house, the Nissetoget and the Skovkarrusellen, among other things. A good end to the day for children aged 7 to 9; daily hours are on tivoli.dk.

All three markets are open between 14 November 2026 and 3 January 2027, as far as the end dates of Nytorv and Højbro allow; see the official pages.

Our tip: the order above is our suggestion, not a rule; times and prices are with the organiser.

Practical

Good to know

🌙 Short daylight

In mid-December Copenhagen has about 7 hours of daylight (own calculation with the NOAA solar position formula, see sources). Plan the outdoor markets before dusk and save Tivoli for the evening.

🚗 Driving time from the Netherlands

Utrecht to Copenhagen is about 902 km and roughly 9.6 hours of driving without breaks (OSRM route calculation, 24 October 2026). Better plan a night on the way or take a ferry.

🧒 With children

Do not plan all three markets in one day. Two markets and Tivoli in the evening is already a full programme for children aged 7 to 9. This is a tip of ours, not a rule.

Guided tour

Explore the city with a guide

🎯 Christmas walk with æbleskiver

Place: Copenhagen Type: Walking tour

💶 Cost: current price at the provider

A guide takes you through the lit-up streets and Christmas markets of the city centre. At the market you taste æbleskiver, Danish Christmas puffs with jam and icing sugar, with coffee.

Where to stay

Where to stay: our 3 favourites

How we chose: We searched Booking.com for a family of two adults and two children (7 and 9) for the period 11 December 2026 – 13 December 2026 and only kept places with a rating of at least 8.0 and 50+ reviews. So no paid placements, but addresses that guests themselves rate highly. We haven’t stayed there ourselves (yet).

Getting there

By car and ferry

Do not plan all three markets in one day. Two markets and Tivoli in the evening is already a full programme for children aged 7 to 9. This is a tip of ours, not a rule.
