Introduction

To Sweden with the family

Red wooden houses, a lake with a jetty and a canoe on the shore: that’s my picture of Sweden. For our boys it’s above all the land of Pippi and Emil, so Vimmerby is firmly on the list.

Many families call Sweden the ideal first camping trip to the north: quiet roads, swimming lakes everywhere and lots of freedom thanks to allemansrätten.

📅 When are you going?

June – August

Best time for camping and swimming. Around Midsummer (late June) there’s lots of celebrating, but some shops are closed then.

There are hardly any barriers: cameras read your number plate. Handy, but good to know what to expect along the way. Overland to Sweden you pay for the Øresund Bridge and, depending on your route, the Great Belt Bridge; with a ferry from Kiel, Travemünde or Rostock you skip them.

English: In the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, Sweden is number 8 out of 123 countries (score 609, level “very high”). Germany is number 4 (615), the Netherlands number 1 (624). So you’ll get by with English almost everywhere, but a few words of Swedish always go down well.
