Introduction

To Denmark with the family

Denmark is the closest. What our boys want there is quickly said: LEGO. I’m looking forward more to the wide beaches and dunes of Jutland.

For many families, Denmark is their first taste of Scandinavia. Wild camping is forbidden, but there are lots of simple nature campsites and shelters for a night outdoors.

Light & darkness

☀️ How long the days are

In summer the kids don’t want to go to bed because it’s still light outside; in winter it’s already dark in the afternoon. We calculated sunrise and sunset for the longest and the shortest day.

Calculated on 22 Oct 2026 with the NOAA solar position formula (Python library astral 3.2), local time, including normal refraction. In summer it stays light for a long time even after sunset.

Tip: pack sleep masks! When the trip is worth it is under On the road, northern lights and midnight sun under On site.

Food & drink

🍽️ Food and drink in Denmark

An open sandwich with all the trimmings, a hot dog from a stand and a cinnamon bun from the bakery: Danish food is simple, and kids always find something. These are the dishes the official tourist board recommends itself.

Danish doesn’t really have a word for “please”, VisitDenmark writes: so Danes aren’t being rude when they don’t say it (VisitDenmark). People toast with Skål! Handy if you also read German: the Lille Ordbog of the Region Sønderjylland-Schleswig is a small Danish-German dictionary for everyday use.

English: In the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, Denmark is number 7 out of 123 countries (score 611, level “very high”). Germany is number 4 (615), the Netherlands number 1 (624). So you’ll get by with English almost everywhere, but a few words of Danish always go down well.
