Summer in the north also means mosquitoes. Especially in June and July in northern Finland and Sweden there can be plenty of them. And there are ticks in the woods and long grass. A few smart habits keep the bother to a minimum.

Mosquitoes

🦟 Mosquitoes

In northern Finland there are lots of mosquitoes in June and July; see also our best time to travel.

What helps: a spot with a bit of wind, long sleeves in the evening, insect repellent and a head net. Keep the tent closed and preferably don’t pitch right next to still water. A mosquito net is on our packing list too.

Ticks

🕷️ Ticks and TBE

Ticks can transmit TBE (tick-borne encephalitis). Folkhälsomyndigheten in Sweden recommends vaccination for anyone likely to get many tick bites in a risk area, and keeps a map of risk areas. (source: Folkhälsomyndigheten, Folkhälsomyndigheten)

If you’re unsure about vaccination, talk to your GP or a travel clinic. Check yourself and the children for ticks every evening.
